The sun came down, and two Cross's appeared instead of one.
This was a shock to Nile. He could not fathom how one being can exist twice, worse yet, three times. He remembered the amount of difficulty he had to endure to put one Cross down, even with immense help from the guy with the snakes and the sniper. The memory made his spine shiver a bit and he held tighter to silva for comfort.
The two beasts, on the other hand, did not seem to pay particular attention to him. In fact, they did not seem to recognize him at all. They continued to advance calmly down the square. The one in the front seemed to sense the tension and looked at Nile and saw him holding Silva. He looked a bit bewildered but still uninterested.
Nile, still under a bit of shock, was convinced that he had no chance of coming out of this unscathed. That being said, he had a duty to perform. He made an implicit promise to protect the old man and he had no right to falter. He muttered a prayer and waved Silva around in a clear message: you shall not pass.
The two beasts saw things differently. They saw his legs shaking for a split second and his sweat running down his hands and made a decision. They continued walking until they passed him by. Just before the passage, Nile looked up at the first one, huge and ominous, and Cross returned the look with eyes as cold as ice.
Now, the way Nile perceived this exchange was interesting. his initial fear turned into a momentary relief as the two beasts passed without showing the slightest sign of animosity. He would live to fight another day, and the old man seemed capable enough to get rid of a Cross or two. Win-win.
But pride was a dangerous sin, and Nile had it in heaps. His relief was shortlived and was abruptly shattered by the look he received from Cross. He realized that he was being utterly humiliated. Cross did not consider him worthy, That look broke him to pieces. relief turned to humiliation which, inevitably, turned to blind rage. He turned to face them both.
"Hey, you!" He screamed
"What do you want?" said the first Cross, without turning
"Your head, I want both your heads, and I'll pluck them clean with this" he pointed to Silva
The beasts looked at one another, then the first Cross gave his back to the scene and continued on his way, while the second stood there, facing Nile.
"That fucker" thought Nile, still breathing heavily. He picked up Silva and took flight. His agility was surprising considering he had the heavy scythe on him. He dashed toward the second Cross with hot fury. Cross on the other hand, lifted his sword to the heavens and was preparing to bring down doom. A split second later, a collision took place and the earth trembled under Cross's mighty blow.
Nile was nowhere to be seen, however, as the rubble started to settle. He had dodged the blow and dashed forward. His small shadow appeared behind the first Cross. He jumped and came down wih all his weight on Silva, slashing Cross's bareback. He felt the initial resistance of the beast's iron skin and feared that his blade might brake again, but to his delight, Silva was as sturdy as it looked. He slashed until he struck the earth and as soon as his feet landed, he dashed again, this time sideways.
Cross's back was red and dripping. He was still standing.
"Don't you dare turn your back when I'm talking to you, Punk!" Nile shouted, with his nostrils flaring up like steam engines.
This is going to be a long night.
